CIUDAD OBREGON, Mexico —
Masum Burak, general director of the International Winter Wheat
Improvement Program in Turkey, is attending the Borlaug 100 conference for two reasons.
His agricultural research in Turkey involves close collaboration with CIMMYT, the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center and host of the event. He’s also concerned about yellow rust, a disease that affects and destroys wheat plants in Turkey.
Burak noted the importance of Norman Borlaug’s work in the development of wheat strains resistant to environmental factors like drought and disease. Borlaug’s work continues to win respect worldwide, Burak said.
“In wheat growing areas of the world, he’s known as the Father of the Green Revolution,” Burak said. “Researchers respect his work. He was a big fighter for food security and preventing hunger and starvation.”
