Attacking Aflatoxin: Charity Kawira Mutegi

Charity Kawira Mutegi speaks at a news conference on Wednesday at the Marriott Downtown Hotel as part of the World Food Prize events. Mutegi is the 2013 recipient of the Norman Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application, endowed by the Rockefeller Foundation. In her research in Kenya, she has focused on aflatoxin, a mold that infects crops and can be fatal to those who eat it. She led efforts that identified aflatoxicosis, which killed 125 people in Kenya in 2005-2006, and helped to identify a solution. Mutegi now is working to develop a biocontrol product that will reduce aflatoxin levels in corn. Photo by Jessica Schlager
